The Awe of Tomorrow
If you’re like most people and companies today, you probably think that tomorrow will be a lot like today. It just makes sense. Especially with our access to weather forecasts, traffic reports, news predictions and stock speculation telling us in some detail what tomorrow will bring.
No surprises here!
The reality is, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
With all the predictions that are going on, we forget that tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us. At any level. Ever. Tomorrow is the definition of the unknown. I’ll spare you reading up on German theoretical physicist, Werner Heisenberg’s, uncertainty principle: Uncertainty is literally built into the fabric of the universe. No matter what prediction tools we employ, we haven’t been, are not and will never be able to perfectly predict what the future will bring.
From there we have a few choices…
We can hold onto the protection of prediction, we can opt to reject alternate views, we can stay attached to only what we already think. Although, like many people and companies I’ve worked with, I think you’ll find that incredibly limiting (not to mention it only leads to uninspired, incremental results… at best).
Or, we can step back for a moment, and appreciate that tomorrow is in a way the great beyond. What’s possible there is beyond us, beyond our imagination and beyond ourselves. Sometimes I don’t know how we all wake up most days not in total awe of all that is here. Humbled and grateful for the vastness, the power, the infinite nature of the world we live in. From that place, there are near-infinite possibilities for tomorrow, and you have a new freedom in creating what those possibilities will be.
I know the path that I’m on. What will it be for you? And if you choose awe – how do you cultivate that experience? It doesn’t necessarily come naturally for many of us when the alarm goes off Monday morning, myself included.
Tell me in the #NoMatterWhat Community what you do to stay in that space of humility, gratitude and awe. I’m curious to hear and there’s no telling who else you might inspire.
Now don’t get me wrong here. I’m all for using as many prediction tools as possible – after all, I do want some idea of what the weather is going to be as I’m packing for my next keynote. But when we’re not attached to these predictions, views and perspectives, I guarantee it will open up something more. More for your company, more for your community and more for yourself. When you let go of already knowing, you’ll find more in that awe that you could ever predict.
