Stop Snoozing Your Results

 
 

Most people ultimately know what there is to do to get the results they want. At least when they stop to think about it. Here’s the problem, it’s just all too natural for many of us to avoid the discomfort of actually doing it. Including me, and I wrote the book on it! 

I don't know about you but for me, avoiding discomfort often starts from the second I wake up. In fact, I'm often one to avoid the discomfort of waking up!

BOOM – snooze. Anyone else hit snooze this morning?

Finally I do get up and I’m feeling a little tired. BOOM – coffee! 

I get to where I’m going and look at the stairs. BOOM – elevator! 

From there on the day is a constant game of choice: either avoid discomfort. Or lean into it. Our days are oftentimes filled with procrastinating, distracting and dodging even the smallest discomforts that will get us to our goals. 

Just look for yourself right now… what are you putting off? Procrastinating doing? 

The next quarterly report? Talking to that team member that isn’t performing well? Sending that short text to your significant other?

And listen… If we’re avoiding these small discomforts that we’re aware of… Imagine all we do unconsciously to avoid the big discomforts. Yes, those things that will yield breakthrough results. 

The question for all of us to contend with is: why? Why do we struggle with DOING the things that we know are good for us? 

I’ll give you a simple answer, at least at a high level, that maybe you already thought of. Because doing those things oftentimes doesn’t feel very good (and we’ve gotten quite used to comforts which we often take for granted!). They require effort, intention, maybe giving up viewpoints that are more comfortable to hold on to, or maybe just rolling out of your warm bed into your day.

I’ll tell you from my experience first hand and from working with countless companies and team members – if you’re not careful, your business, life and all of your results can simply become a byproduct of the discomfort you’re avoiding. Discomfort doesn’t feel good. But the latest research out of Yale suggests that when you embrace discomfort (instead of avoiding it) you can learn up to 4x faster! It’s a biohack to being better, faster and smarter. If only I had known that in college I’d be sitting in the front row on a bed of nails! 

In all seriousness, as a first step – just start noticing where you might be avoiding discomfort in your everyday life. And when you’re ready, stop snoozing your results (and your alarm) and start challenging yourself to a microdose (at least) of it daily.
