Misogis: The Life-Changing Practice of Doing What Feels Impossible

DECEMBER 30, 2024

The best way to break free from limiting beliefs is through physical challenges (Misogis) that push us beyond what we think is possible. By proving to ourselves through action that we are capable of more, we redefine our boundaries and unlock greater potential.

Do something that feels “impossible”

What’s possible for you?

Our answers are already limited by what we currently believe.

Here’s the thing: those beliefs?

They’re often not serving us and not true. To reach the next level, we must challenge the very beliefs that hold us back. And not just mentally—our subconscious needs proof.

On a hike with a new friend the other day, he reminded me about the concept of Misogis: goals so ambitious that you only have a 50/50 chance of success. These aren’t just challenges—they’re invitations to venture into the unknown, to confront what feels impossible. Misogis test our limits not just physically, but mentally, reshaping what we believe we’re capable of.

That’s why I’m so drawn to adventures and challenges that seem beyond my reach. They’re not just activities; they’re acts of liberation. Every mountain climbed, every grueling finish line crossed, every moment I push past what I thought I could endure—these are proof to my subconscious that I am greater than my fears, greater than my doubts.

The physical nature of Misogis is key. Unlike abstract goals, physical challenges offer concrete evidence of growth. You see the summit, feel the burn, and witness the transformation firsthand. It’s undeniable proof: you’re capable of more.

Over the years, I’ve tackled many Misogis, and they’ve been life-changing. So, here’s my challenge for you: commit to one Misogi in 2025 for yourself. Just one. Something physical and audacious—something beyond what you think you can do.

  • Run your first 5K.

  • Walk a marathon.

  • Climb that mountain you’ve always admired from afar.

  • Push your limits on a bike.

  • Work towards a personal pull-up record.

The specifics don’t matter as much as the scale. The goal is to step so far outside the confines of what feels comfortable and possible, it breaks your limited thinking once and for all.

I’m just back from walking 52 miles with The MidLife Male founder, Greg Scheinman, for his 52nd birthday (send him some love here) and I have a few more things stacked up for 2025 already. I’ll share details soon. But let’s make 2025 a year to really redefine ourselves and what’s possible. To not live based on our fears and past experiences, but rather on the potential that’s waiting to be unleashed from within. Let’s allow our actions to show us just how expansive our capacity really is.

Your Misogi awaits. And so does your potential.

Key Idea

Until you do something you thought you couldn’t, you won’t know what you’re truly capable of. Our limiting beliefs will hold us back, until we prove them wrong. And the best way to break free from them is through physical challenges (Misogis) that push us beyond what we think is possible. By proving to ourselves through action that we are capable of more, we redefine our boundaries and unlock greater potential.

Takeaway

Do something that feels “impossible”

Build your Movement

What’s a physical activity that you maybe have dreamed of, but believe there’s no way you can do it? How can you commit and work towards that now?
