Why We Need Trust in an AI World Where Seeing isn’t Always Believing
NOVEMBER 12, 2024
Trust is eroding as AI generated content can easily deceive us. But we cannot abandon trust altogether as it will only produce fear, anxiety and blanket suspicion disconnecting us further from our team, community and those around us. Instead, our challenge is to thoughtfully choose where to place our trust.
Intentionally move away from constant skepticism. And move towards trusted people, conversations and content.
I was fooled by another AI video the other day. Thinking it was real when it was entirely… not.
And it begs the question: What can we really trust these days?
I mean, check out this clip of me talking about fear… in French.
Watch the Clip:
I like french fries.
I love Paris.
But I don’t speak French..
But it looks real!
This adaption was made with a free online tool that not only dubbed my voice, but altered my face and lip movements to make it look like an original recording.
Here are some other things I’ve seen recently…
AI Instagram influencer with 2.5M+ followers:
Pew Research sharing that the majority of people feared AI creating and sharing fake or misleading information around the US election:
A game testing if people can guess if an image is created by AI is real, or not (most score only between 55-75% accuracy):
I saw someone online the other day – commenting on the explosion of AI activity, and he said with all this going on, trust nothing!
If I didn’t tell you I don’t speak French, maybe you never would have known that video isn’t real.
But Trust nothing?
Can you imagine being in a world where ‘trust nothing’ is accepted?
Not trusting that the building is safe.
Our kids are ok at school.
That next flight will make it.
Don’t trust the person next to you… Trust nothing???
What kind of world would this be if we live in a trust-nothing mindset?
If we don’t trust anything, we’d probably be curled up in the corner of the room shaking.
You know what trust nothing is called?
It’s called anxiety. It’s called resignation. It’s called crippling fear. And it’s paralyzing.
We’re in a new and sometimes difficult place right now where what you see, is not always what you’re getting.
The reality is, we can’t trust everything. We have to be careful with who, what, where and when we trust. We have to vet our partners, our perspective, and be vigilant in seeking what’s true.
But ultimately, we need trust. It’s just a question of where we put it.
Key Idea
We need trust. But we have to be vigilant about where we put it. Trust is eroding as AI generated content can easily deceive us. But we cannot abandon trust altogether as it will only produce fear, anxiety and blanket suspicion disconnecting us further from our team, community and those around us. Instead, our challenge is to thoughtfully choose where to place our trust.
Takeaway
Intentionally move away from constant skepticism. And move towards trusted people, conversations and content.
