Small Steps Won’t Get You There—Here’s What Will

MARCH 10, 2025

Without a bold commitment to something greater, small steps don’t lead anywhere meaningful. Big commitments give us direction. They provide a benchmark to measure progress. And they keep us moving when we’d otherwise slow down.

Commit big, and take the next small step.

During a masterclass I hosted this past weekend, one participant asked a question that stuck with me.

We were talking about commitments, and she asked, “What if I can only commit to the next step I know I can take?”

It’s a great question—because yes, every growth journey I've ever taken, whether it was climbing mountains or building businesses, has required that next step. Committing to the next step is essential.

But here’s the truth: Without a bigger commitment pulling you forward, those steps wouldn't have mattered.

Baby steps. The next step. Small actions. Tiny improvements. They all have their place—I even teach strategies around them. But if that’s all you focus on, it’s also why so many people get stuck.

Why take the next step up the mountain if you’re not headed to the top?

Why have that uncomfortable conversation if you’re not moving toward a better, deeper, more productive relationship?

Without a bold commitment to something greater, those small steps don’t lead anywhere meaningful and become exhausting.

It’s the bigger commitment—the full vision—that stretches us. That’s what demands we find energy we didn’t think we had, trust something deeper, and grow into a version of ourselves we’ve never met before.

So whatever you’re working on—your business, your health, your relationships—ask yourself:

Are you just taking baby steps?

Or have you committed to something so bold it requires you to become more than you are today?

Big commitments give us direction. They give us a benchmark to measure progress. And they keep us moving when we’d otherwise slow down.

Because when I talk about growth, I’m not just talking about incremental progress.

I’m talking about transformation.

About breaking through what’s holding you back.

About stepping into what’s possible.

That’s the heart of the No Matter What movement.

It’s not about playing small. It’s about showing up with full commitment, defying limits, and discovering what you’re truly capable of.

Key Idea

Small steps without a big vision are a dead end. Without a bold commitment to something greater, small steps don’t lead anywhere meaningful. Big commitments give us direction. They provide a benchmark to measure progress. And they keep us moving when we’d otherwise slow down.

Takeaway

Commit big, and take the next small step.

Build your Movement

What is a big goal that you’ve been taking small steps toward? Can you make a bigger commitment to draw you forward?
